Larissa reminded me of my joy for singing through her teaching and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to work with her.

About Me

I am a singer, performer, voice teacher, workshop clinician, and adjudicator with over 12 years of experience. As an active performer, my focus has been in contemporary opera, having appeared in many premieres such as: Sweat by Juliet Palmer and Anna Chatterton (Centre for Contemporary Opera, New York), Chris Thornborrow and Julie Tepperman’s Selfie (Tapestry Opera), Adam Scime’s L’homme et le ciel (FAWN Opera), Brian Current’s Airline Icarus (Soundstreams), Dean Burry and Lorna MacDonald’s The Bells of Baddeck, and Stephanie Martin’s Llandovery Castle.

On the concert stage, I have recently been engaged by Theatre of Early Music, Toronto Masque Theatre, Pax Christi Chorale, Oriana Singers, Quinte Symphony, and Cantabile Choirs.

I am also the co-founder and artistic director of the Bicycle Opera Project, a company that champions new opera works and tours exclusively by bicycle! With Bicycle Opera, I have performed over 20 new works with Ottawa International Chamberfest, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s New Creations Festival, The Royal Conservatory of Music’s 21C Festival, Stratford Summer Music, Westben Festival, and in numerous unusual performance spaces all over Ontario.

About My Studio

I believe that anyone can sing and I strive to foster a nurturing studio.

Prior to relocating to Kingston with my family three years ago, I was based in Toronto, where I spent the past 6 years on faculty at Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts. I have adjudicated for the Pickering GTA Music Festival and the Peterborough Kiwanis Festival, and been a juror for the JUNO and Dora awards. I have given masterclass at Queen’s University, and have also regularly taught vocal workshops to high school students for the Canadian Opera Company.

I am registered with ORMTA (Ontario Registered Music Teacher’s Association), registered with the Royal Conservatory of Music, and hold a Bachelor of Music in voice performance from Wilfrid Laurier University.

My teaching centres around healthy technique, encouraging my students to free tensions, achieve balance, and create awareness as they find their unique voice. I primarily teach classical voice and musical theatre, although I enjoy dabbling in popular styles as well.

My students have enjoyed success in RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) examinations, competing in music festivals such as Kiwanis, role auditions, and post-secondary auditions.

Lessons cover fundamental technique, repertoire, musicianship, ear training, sight singing, text work, and dramatic interpretation. Most importantly, students are encouraged to bring out their inner expression and find joy in singing!

Testimonials

Larissa’s approach to teaching goes beyond the vocal studio. Not only has Emma improved her singing, she has learned how to project confidence in stressful situations and is more at ease with public speaking. Larissa has proven herself to be invaluable in Emma’s growth and maturity.

Larissa is everything I look for in a voice instructor. I like that Larissa has an academic background and training in classical vocal performance, as well as years of experience as a singer/performer and as an adjudicator. Her knowledge and experience are evident in the way she coaches Katie, bringing out the best in her while teaching her proper vocal technique.

Larissa creates a space so holistic within her teaching that all of her students are invited to come as they are, and that’s where real growth takes place. Larissa helped me gain the knowledge and skill I needed in order to achieve my goals. She teaches with an intricate balance of technique, and style, and performance skills, and joy.
